According to a Gallup poll, 41% of Christians don't read their Bibles at all. How are we to know God? Is what the Bible says important for today? Can we even understand this book? The Bible Core Course is designed to equip you with tools to study the Bible in order to develop and deepen your relationship with God and share Him with others. The Bible is our primary source to learn about God. Its intent is to tell the story of God and His supernatural, self-disclosing acts in history. Simply reading the Bible is not enough - how and why we read it are crucial.
Our aim is to read the Bible for transformation, not just information. What we believe about who God is deeply shapes how we see ourselves and the world around us. Our understanding of who He is informs our values, thinking, motives and direction. As we encounter more of God through His word, our assumptions are brought into the light of His truth. During our lecture phase, you will put this into practice, as you gain a broad view of the Bible, as well as closely studying a number of its specific books.
On the BCC we use an inductive Bible study approach, one of the most effective ways to grasp what the Bible is really saying. This method is an investigative process that uses four basic steps: observation, interpretation, application, and proclamation. It intentionally places the text before you so that you can understand the authors’ original meaning for their intended audience, as well as reawaken your imagination through the Holy Spirit.
Knowing God through His Word so that you can effectively make Him known is vitally important, whatever He calls you to. Focussing on your own growth is only part of the picture. In following Jesus, it is central to practice personally sharing with others and regularly articulating the message of the gospel, calling people to discipleship. You will learn how to teach, preach, lead small-group Bible studies, and be mobilised into areas where Bible training is needed. Ultimately our aim is to develop as fully-devoted disciples with tools to help fulfil the Great Commission.
Outreach is a key part of the Bible Core Course, as you take the skills taught in the classroom and apply them in a cross-cultural situation. Field-based learning solidifies your confidence and trust in God as you step out and see Him move through you in the nations. You will have many opportunities to practice teaching, preaching and ministering to people in their situations. You will grow as you share the gospel, using your understanding and revelation from the lecture phase to impart the Word of God.
An additional benefit of outreach is coming alongside the local church, where you are able to strengthen and encourage the international Body of Christ. On outreach, strategically partnering with ongoing local ministry is key to lasting influence. Bible distribution is one significant aspect of this. With our BCC outreaches we seek out opportunities to serve those who are Biblically under-resourced. People's lives are transformed as we give them access to the Bible and equip them with skills to understand the Word of God for themselves. All of this provides further depth and rich experience to build on, however God leads you in the future.
