Gotland was once the seafaring nucleus of northern Europe. In the late middle ages, almost all trade and commerce from the East passed through Visby’s gates. This medieval cosmopolis quickly became one of Europe’s most powerful cities. Christianity exploded on this island as well. The early missionaries to the island saw this location as a strategic place to reach the Baltic and the far East. Virtually every farmer and entrepreneur erected their own cathedral adjacent to their property.
Unfortunately those days are but memories. Most cathedrals sit empty year round, and the Christianity that was once so fervent is now lackluster and in sharp decline. Gotland is perhaps the least Christian part of all of Sweden, yet it welcomes nearly a million tourists each year. There are small congregations littered about the island who hunger for biblical teaching. There are pockets of youth who long for discipleship.
The ministry opportunities vary each year. An internship on Gotland could include some of the following:
- Serving at a two week confirmation camp
- Tourist evangelism
- Practical work (i.e. dishes and housekeeping) during conferences
- Youth games and activities
- Opportunities to preach/ lead worship
- Providing English courses
- Prayer walks
- The length of an internship could range from 2 weeks up to a year.
There are endless opportunities, and we’d love to partner with others who joyfully declare with the Psalmist, “The Lord reigns...let the islands be glad!” (Psalm 97:1).
