Started as a community health and development project this organisation has expanded to include a 150-bed hospital training for midwives and nurses a research hub and an English-speaking school for children up to grade 10. The project has a holistic approach which seeks spiritual physical social and emotional transformation.
The project is seeking a qualified anaesthetist to support the team of non-medical anaesthetists here. The anaesthetic team consists of 2 senior nurse anaesthetists (trained by visiting foreigners over the years) a medical assistant anaesthetist and several nurses. The hospital has 3 operating theatres one for mainly general/gynaecology one for obstetrics and one for small procedures and endoscopies. Most of the caseload is obstetrics (with many high risk cases) gynae and general surgery. There are 3600 deliveries per year with a 20 Caesarean section rate. We occasionally operate on neonates as well as all other age groups. There is a need for a physician anaesthetist to expand the teaching of the newer anaesthesia nurses to improve the skills of existing nurses to help manage complex patients within a limited resource setting and to maintain resuscitation skills.
The project is seeking a qualified anaesthetist (consultant/attending or senior trainee). He or she will need to be prepared to meet clinical needs as they arise as well as contribute to training. Those with research interests will find opportunity to work on existing projects.
