There are 19 major world religions which are subdivided into a total of 270 large religious groups. This unit provides the student with a general introduction to religion (definition, functions, approaches to study of world religions) and attempts to help the student gain a basic understanding of the significant non-Christian religious traditions on their own terms. Obviously a single unit can’t cover every significant faith system (religion), therefore this courses will focus on the main four – Primal Religions (formerly known as animism or traditional religions), Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam. The unit is not polemical in nature, but missiological & theological. In addition, students will be encouraged to develop a deeper interest in a given religious tradition that will continue after their study is completed.
